The Cardinals were scheduled to visit St. Louis last week.
Then they got a call from Rams coach Jeff Fisher and it didn’t go well.
“I just said, ‘Hey, I’ll come back tomorrow,'” Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu told the Cardinals’ official website.
“Then I was in the airport.
We flew home.”
The Cardinals called the Rams and they were scheduled for a visit at a hotel in St. Petersburg, Fla.
They had been scheduled to fly to Tampa on Wednesday.
Instead, the Cardinals flew home to St. Augustine, Fla., to take a break.
“We had to go out and get a couple of days off,” Mathieu said.
“It was a little rough.”
The Rams and Cardinals met for their first game last season in St Louis.
After that, the two teams split up.
The Rams have had a good start to the 2017 season and the Cardinals have lost eight of nine, including a 34-14 loss to the Chargers on Sunday night.
The Cardinals have played in six straight games against the Rams.
Mathieu was a big part of the Rams’ winning streak in St._ Louis.
The former No. 4 overall pick played in 13 games with St. Rams in 2016.
He was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for the season, and was also named to the Pro Bowl.
He led the Rams in sacks with six and forced four fumbles.
“You’ve got to be ready to play, and Tyrann Mathie’s ready to go,” Fisher said.
