The Pittsburgh Steelers have played better this season, but there’s still plenty of work to do.
So, in a bid to stay competitive, the team has hired Mike Tomlins head coach of offensive line.
Tomlin has spent the last few seasons with the Denver Broncos, where he won three Super Bowls with the team.
The Steelers were one of the league’s worst offenses in 2013 and 2014, finishing last in the league in rushing yards per game.
In his first season, Tomlin improved the team’s offense and helped them reach the playoffs.
Tomlins offensive line had a major impact on the Steelers last season, as it allowed only 17 sacks.
Tomls coaching staff is also one of a number of offensive coordinators that have been let go or have been fired since the team returned to the postseason in 2015.
While Tomlins hiring might be a major step forward for the Steelers, it still isn’t enough to keep the team competitive.
The AFC North title and a playoff spot is still on the line for Pittsburgh, and while the team isn’t winning games, they are still in contention to play in the AFC Championship Game.
In addition to his offensive line, Tomlins has coached the offensive line for the last two seasons in Cleveland, and was the offensive coordinator for the Browns from 2011-2014.
He’s also the head coach at Miami, where the team went 4-12 in 2014.
With the Steelers having a top-10 offense in 2014 and 2015, the only way the Steelers can have a successful playoff run in 2018 is if they continue to have a dominant defense.
While the Steelers are in a better position to win this year, Tomlen still has to find a way to find consistency for the offense.
Tomlins offensive line has allowed 15 sacks over the last four seasons, but they are now on pace to allow at least one sack in each of the next four seasons.
Tomlen has a history of improving his offensive lines this offseason.
He replaced head coach Mike Sullivan with John DeFilippo in 2018, and he also brought in former offensive line coach Scott Linehan to help Tomlin with the offensive lines.
Tomlis offensive line is also improving as the season has progressed.
TomLIN has started two of the three games the Steelers have been able to play this season in the second half of games, as the Steelers haven’t been able of getting points on the road.
However, that hasn’t stopped Tomlin from making changes to the line this offseason, including replacing the veteran tackle for a fourth-year player.
He has also brought back veteran linebacker Troy Polamalu, who has been the best linebacker in the NFL the past three seasons.
With both Polam and Linehan having played well in the past two seasons, the Steelers could benefit from some help at linebacker, as well as a more consistent offensive line as they look to build on a strong season.
However of course, there is no guarantee Tomlin will be able to get the team to the playoffs this season.
He is currently on a five-year contract that expires in 2020, and his team is already on the brink of losing its playoff spot.
Tomli has a record of 21-30, with four division titles, two AFC North titles, and a trip to the Super Bowl.
He currently holds the franchise record for wins in a season with 17.
Tomislas team is also in a rebuilding phase this offseason after being ranked as the 10th best team in the NFC last season.
The team is expected to make a splash this offseason by adding another wide receiver, as they signed former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree, and have been linked to former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown.
The biggest question for the team this offseason is whether it can get to the top of the AFC North, or if it will fall short of the division title.
With Tomlin’s departure, the Pittsburgh Steelers could also be looking at the firing of offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan, who was hired by Tomlin after the firing and helped the Steelers to two playoff appearances in five seasons.
While it’s unlikely that Tomlin can win a Super Bowl in 2018 with the same offensive line that he helped the team achieve, he should be able put together a better defense this year with his offensive coordinator.
Tomins offensive linemen also have been one of Tomlins biggest strengths this offseason as he was able to keep his offensive linemen fresh for the postseason, and get them healthy in time to contribute in games.
Tomkins offensive line allowed only 14 sacks last season for the third-most sacks allowed in the entire NFL.
The defense allowed only 21 sacks last year, which is more than any other defensive unit in the division.
Tom has improved the Steelers’ defense, but he still has a lot of work ahead of him.
